ICEY Project – Neighborhood Green

1.    Objective: Neighborhood Green is a short-term project whose goal is to environmentally impact a specific neighborhood for its improvement.

2.    Overview:  This is an opportunity to raise environmental awareness in a specific community on a single day. The idea is to plan a day when a team of volunteers will work with residents of a neighborhood to improve their immediate environment through various activities such as:

       Trash and debris removal

       Yard clean-up and maintenance

       Planting trees, shrubs and/or flowers

       Planting a vegetable garden

       Recycling collection

       Environmental education

       Pamphlet distribution

       Prayer for neighborhood

       Recruitment to join ICEY.

3.    Neighborhood Selection:  Should be selected in cooperation with city and local leaders in order determine where our efforts are most needed and where we can expect high resident participation. It will be important to promote this project several times before the actual event in order to generate a high degree of resident participation. Ideally we should conduct this project in neighborhoods where there are many children and youth, since they are our primary target for our organizational mission.

4.    Promotion:  Can be done by distribution of door hangers, erecting signs, word-of-mouth, etc. for several weeks ahead of the event. It will be important to promote this project several times before the actual event in order to generate a high degree of resident participation.

5.    Volunteers:  May consist of ICEY members, ICEY volunteers, local residents, city or local leaders, and local church members. Local churches may be contacted and given an opportunity to cooperate with our project. Also local college students may be recruited as volunteers.
